KiwiRail Southdown Road 35 & 36 Upgrade Project

The $15 million KiwiRail Southdown Road 35 and 36 upgrade project at MetroPort, Onehunga involved the upgrade of railway Road 35 with 750m long reinforced concrete slab track supporting 100 tonne fork hoist axle loads and Road 36 with ballast track.  The project also involved construction of new container truck access roads and upgrade of freight yard pavement for fork hoists.

Gaia Engineers was engaged by KiwiRail in 2015 for the access road and freight yard pavement, ballast track and reinforced concrete slab geotechnical design.  The construction work was complete in 2017.

Most significant is that the construction of the 750m long reinforced concrete slab track was successfully completed in 10 days (24 hours shift) over the Christmas and New Year block of lines period.
